Nazi flags remind a harsh reminder of hatred

This story is a few days old by now, but it’s still very disturbing.

At a Hanukkah ceremony in Fairfield over the weekend, a trio of pseudo-Nazi’s waved Nazi flags and yelled obscenities at the Jewish community.

According to the Connecticut Post: The men, dressed in black, showed up just as the ceremony was beginning, stayed on the sidewalk about 20 yards from the gazebo. Each carried a flag held in outstretched arms. One flag bore a swastika, another an iron cross.

But those at the scene didn’t let it dampen their day.

Rabbi Shlame Landa who staged the ceremony for Chabad of Fairfield, said “It’s important to see we don’t back down from spreading goodness and light.”

The rabbi continued:  “We continue that battle,” said Landa. “The way we chose to battle darkness is to add a little bit more light. By doing a little bit more goodness is how we fight people who hate. That is what we tried to do tonight.”

Landa has been planning the menorah lighting for weeks and secured a permit from the town Park and Recreation Department. He had hoped to have many more than the 20 or so who braved a freezing rain. He said he wasn’t really focused on what was occurring on the sidewalk, but did notice the numbers in the gazebo seemed to swell a bit toward the end of the short ceremony, which included the lighting of a 9-foot portable menorah, followed by songs and refreshments.

Kudos to him for being bigger than these anti semites.

Tracy, FYI, there was another more recent incident of anti-semitism in Fairfield, see http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/ci_14021526 for details. What on earth is going on down there?

Wow, very good question PsiCop. How awful. Thanks for letting me know. Think it’s the same group?

I absolutely have no idea if there’s a connection. The way the Advocate story reads, the authorities are looking into the possibility. But there might not be … while the menorah-lighting protestors are a group, the letter-writer might be just your garden-variety “lone-wolf” style crank who needs to find something else to occupy his/her time.
