Protestor claims God hates fags/photo by Rebecca Newman
A friend of mine who is vacationing in The Keys right now, was kind enough to snap this photo for me. Naturally, offended and disturbed by this image, I looked up this God Hates Fags Web site. It comes up as Westboro Baptist Church, which is located in Kansas. The page’s favicon (tab logo) is an upside down American flag.
Here’s part of what their About Us section reads:
WBC engages in daily peaceful sidewalk demonstrations opposing the homosexual lifestyle of soul-damning, nation-destroying filth. We display large, colorful signs containing Bible words and sentiments, including: GOD HATES FAGS, FAGS HATE GOD, AIDS CURES FAGS, THANK GOD FOR AIDS, FAGS BURN IN HELL, GOD IS NOT MOCKED, FAGS ARE NATURE FREAKS, GOD GAVE FAGS UP, NO SPECIAL LAWS FOR FAGS, FAGS DOOM NATIONS, THANK GOD FOR DEAD SOLDIERS, FAG TROOPS, GOD BLEW UP THE TROOPS, GOD HATES AMERICA, AMERICA IS DOOMED, THE WORLD IS DOOMED, etc.
Perceiving the modern militant homosexual movement to pose a clear and present danger to the survival of America, exposing our nation to the wrath of God as in 1898 B.C. at Sodom and Gomorrah, WBC has conducted 41,226 such demonstrations since June, 1991, at homosexual parades and other events, including funerals of impenitent sodomites (like Matthew Shepard) and over 200 military funerals of troops whom God has killed in Iraq/Afghanistan in righteous judgment against an evil nation. (See a list of cities where WBC has picketed, and read our FAQ for more information). America crossed the line on June 26, 2003, when the Supreme Court (the conscience of the nation) ruled that we must respect sodomy. WBC teams have picketed all over the United States, and internationally (including Canada, Jordan and Iraq). The unique picketing ministry of Westboro Baptist Church has received international attention, and WBC believes this gospel message to be this world’s last hope. See our news section to keep up with the latest international news regarding WBC. WBC has also been the subject of several documentary films. For example, the BBC’s “The Most Hated Family In America,” “Keith Allen Will Burn In Hell“, “Hatemongers“, “Fall From Grace“, and “The Significant Minority.”
On the homepage, they boast images of signs they’ve held high, including ones that say, “God Hates the U.S.A,” “You’re Going to Hell,” “God is America’s Terror,” and of course, “God Hates Fags.”
Last I checked, the message of Jesus was love and compassion. I doubt he’s looking down at this group and smiling. His ears are probably burning from their bigotry and hatred. This group gives Christians a bad name.
What’s your reaction to this group?

This church and their message of hatred upsets me on a multitude of levels. As a Christian, my faith teaches me to love thy neighbor. Not love thy neighbor only if he/she is straight. Anyone who loves Jesus and his message, knows this to be true. My God’s message is of LOVE as he loves ALL his children. Did Jesus turn his back on Mary Magdalene because she was a prostitute? No, he did not. He loved her regardless. His words, “Those who are without sin, cast the first stone.” Who is Man to Judge for God?
Blaming the death of soldier’s as punishment straight from God is as ridiculous a notion as those that spew it. These fallen soldiers sacrificed their lives for the very same freedoms these hate mongers seem to enjoy. This is how they honor the memory of these brave soldiers?
As a Christian, my faith teaches me to forgive. I have to admit I find it very hard to forgive those who Mock God and his message. I find comfort, in my belief, that these individuals who judge will one day stand before their creator and be judged for THEIR actions.
I think it’s interesting you use the word, “mock.” I think that’s exactly what this group is doing. Well said.
FWIW the Phelps clan — whose campaign against gays has not succeeded — is now going after Jews: http://www.usatoday.com/news/religion/2009-11-13-westboro-gay-jewish_N.htm
